Funerals & Memorials
The grief of losing a loved one is often one of the hardest times a person can go through. In such times, many people turn to the Church seeking compassion and empathy. A Christian funeral, whether in a church or at a cemetery or crematorium, can offer a meaningful, comforting and honouring service, which reflects the traditions of the past and looks to the hope of the future.
Arranging funerals is done with a Funeral Director who then works in partnership with the Parish. There are three based in Belper – Thomas Ryde, Joseph Allen, and the Cooperative – but we work with others too. Some simple things to consider for a Christian funeral service include:
· Music and/or hymns;
· Printed orders of service;
· Poetry and Bible readings;
· Livestreaming the funeral (St Peter’s only);
· Floral arrangements and casket decorations;
· Donations collected for a charitable cause.
Sometimes families choose to have a Memorial Service at later time to remember and honour their loved one. These can happen to mark the anniversary of their death or another special date, or when some family members were unable to attend the funeral. Whatever the reason, Memorial Services can be an beautiful and low-pressured opportunity to gather, remember your loved one, and celebrate the legacy they left behind. St Peter’s has a Garden of Remembrance in which it is permitted to bury cremated remains of loved ones (in conjunction with Church Law). These services are quite short, but often bring a sense of peace and closure for grieving family members, providing a permanent and designated memorial space to visit, and ensuring the ashes are safely secured and protected.
